Every dollar counts. Help your favorite walker reach their fundraising goal!

Kitsap Humane Society has been serving the residents of Kitsap County since 1908. Every year we provide immediate care and shelter to thousands of companion animals who are homeless, lost, ill, and in need of an advocate.  In 2010 alone we re-homed over 4,200 pets! Our spay and neuter program altered around 3,600 animals, helping to drastically reduce pet overpopulation.

Our Mission Statement: The Kitsap Humane Society is an independent non-profit committed to providing positive life-changing solutions to people and companion animals. We do so by:

 Accepting, sheltering, and rehabilitating companion animals in need.

 Providing humane rescue, protection, prevention, adoption, and education services.

 Implementing progressive life-saving and life-affirming programs.

 Creatively collaborating and partnering with our region and supporters to build a model humane community.

Team 4 Feet 4 Paws!
Carrie, Sally, River (and Whitney, via Sally!) are back again to raise money for the Kitsap Humane Society!  We will once again be walking the 5K Petswalk on May 21, 2011.

KHS found homes for over 4,200 homeless pets last year alone, and helped with low cost spay/neuters for over 3,600 animals.  Carrie and Sally have personally taken lost, scared dogs to KHS, with wonderful ends of finding their lost family, and finding their new fur-ever family.

If this cause speaks to you and you are able to donate, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  If not, no worries!  We welcome all well wishes and support of any kind.

Our goal is to beat our amazing total raised last year of $760.  Homemade dog biscuits and new treats will be coming soon!

Thank you so much for your support!

Leo's Story...

I had been house-sitting in early December 2009, making sure the premises were secure and feeding the cats. As my husband and I were making the rounds one evening our dog gets very excited when we come down the deck stairs. Out from under deck crawls this injured and terribly emaciated dog. The dogs immediately start making their acquaintances.

It was clear that this dog badly needed food, medical attention and TLC. My husband told me to take our dog back to the truck and he would try and get the other dog. We had to switch jobs though as once it was just my husband and the other dog, the dog scurried back under deck and wouldn't come out. I used some of the cat food to coax him out and petted him for a minute then chanced picking him up, which he let me do.

We got him bundled into the truck, took him back to our house and into the backyard until we could decide what to do. Kitsap Humane Society was already closed for the day, so we called the emergency vet office to see if they could point us in the right direction. Due to economic circumstances they couldn't help us by taking him, so they gave me the number for animal control, but animal control can't do pick ups on the weekend. So we had an overnight guest.

We gave him some dinner (it was hard not to give him more, but the prevailing wisdom said not to overfeed an emaciated dog). You could see his ribs so prominently he looks striped. We gave him a bath which improved his smell some, but he was not interested in letting me clean his ears and I wasn't going to push it.

There were several injuries on him that we could see. There were scratches and open wounds on his legs. There was what looked like a puncture wound under his jaw, which was matted with dirt. Some of the fur on his back seemed to be singed, though by what we had no idea. There was a sore in one of his ears and the other one needed cleaning badly. And to top it all off the skin on his boy dog parts was rubbed raw.

We wished there was more that we could do for him, but had no idea how to even begin addressing the injuries. At least he was fed and in out of the cold (we got our dog's crate out to put him in when we go to bed). We had been sort of nervous about putting him in the crate for the night, but we were watching tv and had it out in the living room with us. He sniffed at it a bit, then walked right in and curled up. He made no objections to sleeping in the crate for the night and slept the whole night through (so clearly housebroken).

The next morning my husband had left for work and our little guest was not happy about it. Leo, as we had started calling him, was not happy about my husband leaving. He would whine at the door my husband left through, then do a circuit around the house looking for him. Repeat. Before my husband left he leaned down to the dog and said, "I hope you find your family." We wish we had been in a position to keep him, but we both understood how much of a commitment bringing another animal into our family would be and just were not in a position to give our little guest a permanent home.

~~~
I took Leo up to the Kitsap Humane Society later that morning. I went in first to find out their policy on euthanization. I was absolutely not leaving him there if there was a possibility he'd be put down. He was far too sweet of a dog to risk it. Once assured, I got him inside and calmed down with no problem. I filled out what information I could about him and waited there until a vet could come out and do an assessment on him.
The vet thought Leo had probably been in a fight, but none of the wounds were serious and he seemed to be in good spirits. Leo took being looked over like a champ. I gave him a hug and said goodbye. He started whining for me as they led him away which of course made me cry, but they were prepared with some kleenex for me. They gave me his check in number so that I could call and see how was and find out if he had been adopted.
~~~

Leo didn't get adopted right away, but eventually he found a forever home. I feel really blessed to have a place like Kitsap Humane Society in our area that has such a commitment to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals. It is a privilege to participate each year in the Petswalk to support this organization. My dog and I walk for Leo and all the others like him.
