Thanks to supporters like you, we are able to provide positive life-changing solutions to people and companion animals.
In 2012, Kitsap Humane Society rehomed 4,586 pets and completed 2,950 spay/neuter surgeries! Our life-saving efforts would not be possible without your help.

Kitsap Humane Society is a non-profit charitable organization that has been caring for animals in need since 1908. Our vision is that every adoptable companion animal has a home. We work toward that goal daily through the immediate care and sheltering of thousands of companion animals that are homeless, lost and in need of advocate.

Rescue. Rehabilitate. Rehome.

Dear Ruby's Friends!
Please join our team for this year's Petswalk to help support the Kitsap Humane Society!

I've always had cats but almost two years ago I decided that maybe a dog was what I needed.  I had just opened my own solo practice and was staying very late in the office and not getting much exericse.  I was sitting in a CLE one day in Vancouver and came across Ruby's picture on Petfinder.org; she was with a rescue in Snoqualmie. For me, it was love at first sight and I made 2 trips to Snoqualmie before finally bringing her home. Once home, and without the security of the "pack" of other rescue dogs she had been with, I found a scared little one that had obviously suffered some abuse in her past and weighed about 7 pounds less than she does now.

It took us many months to get over the separation anxiety and other issues associated with Ruby's past but I'm happy to say we're pretty much smooth sailing now, except for an occasional sudden move startle or what I call her PTSD days where she just wakes up on the wrong side of the bed and thinks everyone hates her. (Of course, we all have those days, too.)

I had tried to find the right small dog at the Kitsap Humane Society before adopting Ruby but couldn't and have always struggled with that because of my service to and love of the organization and the goals we have.  I'm happy to say we have all kinds of dogs and Ruby and I have made it our mission to help all of them find a home!

Spanky and I will be walking in PetsWalk 2012 for the Kitsap Humane Society in honor of Mr. Purrfect, a six month old, 3 pound kitten I adopted from the Kitsap Humane Society -- he had been found dumpster diving in Port Orchard.  I just popped into the KHS for some affection on a rainy November day as I had done once before.  I had recently lost my personality filled Siamese, Bruno, to cancer; his brother, Ching Dao, was beautiful but aloof.  The second I took this scruffy looking kitten from his cage, he began purring very loudly.  When I put him in the cage, his purring stopped and the sad eyes started.  I'd pick him up and hold him again and the purring resumed.  I had no intention of adopting when I went in.  After an hour of this dance, I could not walk out without adopting him.

Mr. Purrfect was more dog than cat-like in his personality.  He went everywhere I went, including the shower (but he was polite and waited until I got out before he went in to wash his paws).  I had to buy a cat hammock because he would sit on my keyboard when I was working at home.  He loved the hammock and periodically he would reach out and touch my hand with his paw - as if to say, "enough with the work!"  He quickly grew - I think he was part Maine Coon - to a healthy 14 pound cat.  He was tall and loved drinking out of the toilet.  He stayed away when company came to the house, except every year on Christmas Eve, he would bless us with his presence and antics.  He died after four years - too soon - but he will never be forgotten.  I hope that by raising money for the KHS, others will be able to find that perfect addition to their family.
